City of Allentown to launch 2nd Annual Adult Indoor Basketball League April 10 – June 2010

City of Allentown’s Recreation Bureau is now accepting teams for the 2010 Adult Spring In-door Basketball League set for April 10 – June 2010 at the City of Allentown’s Cumberland Gardens gymnasium located on the corner of Susquehanna and South Ellsworth Streets in Allentown, PA. The league begins Saturday April 10th with a double header. Games will be played every Sunday (1:00pm – 6:00pm)


Cost is $250.00 per team (check only) and a $70.00 refundable referee cash deposit.

Registration Dates: March 25, 2010 (Cumberland Gardens Gym from 6:30pm – 8:30pm)

March 27, 2010 (Cumberland Gardens Gym from 8:30am – 12:30pm)

April 1, 2010 (Cumberland Gardens Gym from 6:30pm – 8:30pm)

April 3, 2010 (Cumberland Gardens Gym from 8:30am-12:30pm)

Department of Parks & Recreation Employment Opportunity

The City of Allentown’s Department of Parks & Recreation is currently looking to hire a PT Seasonal Recreational Support Clerk to support the Recreation Bureau.


Rate: $12.00/hr. – $15.00/hr

This (9) month position (mid February – mid November) 30 hours maximum per week position performs a variety of standard and some specialized clerical activities to support the Superintendent of Recreation and the Recreation Bureau. Candidates must be able to utilize excellent communication skills with the public regarding directions and the dissemination of information to the general public in English and Spanish. One (1) to two years of related work experience desirable.


ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Communicate the master schedule for the park system including but not limited to internal and external facility use, special events, fields, courts, pavilions, picnic groves and rental information. Required to speak Spanish to communicate with residents and provide direction for the general public requesting information and translation when necessary.

Maintains an effective filing system for all past and present Recreation Bureau information.

Compiles data for administrative analysis, performing requested research, prepares work sheets and makes computations on materials assembled.

Assists in the preparation of brochures, information packets or other marketing materials as directed.
Greets and screens visitors in a courteous and customer friendly manner.
Type letters, files and maintains day-to-day office functions.
Assists department staff with special projects and conducting research.
Composes general correspondence and completes various reports
Provide quality and effective customer service with courtesy and understanding to our customers, citizens and internal departments.
Performs related work as may be required.

Halloween Parade set for Sunday October 31st 2010

Did you know that the Allentown Recreation Bureau is responsible for organizing the Oldest Halloween Parade in the Country? According to a front page article of the 1905 Morning Call The Halloween Parade started officially on this date.


The 2009 Halloween Harvest Parade increased the number of divisions from (11) in 2008 to (13) in 2009 as we increased the number of parade participants in the parade from 1,000 in 2008 to 1,909.

This year's Halloween Parade will be Sunday October 31st 2010
